Transitions social enterprise was invited to speak about refugee employment at the Home Office Syrian Refugee Resettlement Delivery Conference in Westminster on 28th January.
Transitions was represented by two Syrian candidates (a civil engineer and an accountant), Vicky Johnson, Employment Advisor, and Martin James, Transitions Director, all of whom suggested contributions to the report to be written by the organisers of the conference.
The recommendations made included covering labour-market orientation in pre-departure cultural orientation sessions, a more flexible approach by DWP to refugee benefit claimants, building capacity in the voluntary sector (including existing Syrian community organisations), and clearer signposting to information, both for refugees and for employers.
At the moment many employers are still confused regarding refugees’ rights to work. Transitions are encouraging the Home Office to provide clear information on official websites and literature.
